What’s An Ombuds?

The role of an organizational ombuds is to provide a safe and confidential space for employees to discuss their issues or complaints without fear of retaliation. They are impartial and do not take sides in disputes, but rather facilitate conversations and help parties find mutually agreeable solutions.

responsibilities of an organizational ombuds may include:

  1. Providing a confidential and impartial ear to employees or members, allowing them to voice their concerns or grievances.

  2. Exploring different options and proposing strategies for resolution, such as mediation or facilitated conversations.

  3. Offering information, guidance and referrals to other resources within the organization or externally.

  4. Identifying patterns, systemic issues or areas for improvement and making recommendations to the organization's leadership or management.

  5. Assisting in navigating organizational policies, procedures and reporting mechanisms.

Overall, the organizational ombuds plays a critical role in fostering a positive work environment, promoting fairness, and preventing or mitigating conflicts within an organization.

Organizational ombuds do not:

Advocate for any specific party or take sides in a conflict or dispute.

Have decision-making authority or power to enforce solutions or resolutions.

Provide legal advice or represent individuals before courts or other legal bodies.

Replace existing formal channels (such as HR or legal departments) for addressing complaints or disputes.

Conduct investigations or serve as a formal disciplinary authority.

Preserve confidentiality when there is an immediate risk of serious harm or threat to life.

Keep records of complaints or personally identifiable information that could negatively impact confidentiality.

Overstep ethical boundaries or misrepresent their role within the organization.

Interfere with the regular functioning of an organization or its hierarchical structure.

Offer therapy or psychological counseling services.
